Sullivan's counting down

Posted on 26 July 2000  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Neil Sullivan can barely wait for the start of the Premiership campaign - and an end to what is a punishing pre-season programme for goalkeepers. Both Sullivan and Ian Walker have concentrated on fitness work with the rest of the squad rather then their specialist training so far and both will be pleased to see the back of it.

Sullivan arrived on a free transfer during the summer after suffering relegation from the Premiership with Wimbledon, right. He is back in the routine of training again.

"It is hard work but, then again, pre-season is quite hard anyway especially for goalkeepers as we have to do all that long-distance running. It's not for us really! We just have to get through it and get our levels of fitness up again after the summer break. It's a part of the job that needs to be done.

"We come away to work hard and the games are an enjoyable part of that but obviously we have to do a lot of running as well. It is tough and you are away from home for a week, which is another thing you really don't like doing too often. You get on with it though because there are plenty of highs as well."

Sullivan and Walker shared duties in Scandinavia and managed to complete the three-game tour without conceding a goal.

"I've been delighted with the games," added the Scottish number one. "You come away in pre-season to get all the little bits and pieces honed in. I made a couple of saves on Saturday but there are still a few things that need work and we've still two or three weeks to go. It's not a case of being the finished article yet so we'll keep knuckling down and try to improve on what we've done so far.

"Personally, I can't wait to get going. It seems strange. At the back end of the season when you've a lot of niggles and pains you think you need to get away, go on holiday and have a rest but two, three weeks into your holiday and you just want to get back to it.

"Now, being so close to the season and having played a couple of games, you want to get back into the Premiership and look to win things with Tottenham."
