Subbuteo marathon hits target

Posted on 16 October 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The recent Leukaemia Research Subbuteo Premiership was a great success and the target of £10,000 was easily met. The whole event took place in an attempt to predict how this season’s FA Premier League will finish and at the same time, raise £10,000 for the Fund, whose Honorary Chairman is former White Hart Lane legend, Gary Lineker.

40 players representing the 20 FA Premier League teams fought out every one of the 380 fixtures, which make up the 10-month programme. As if that wasn’t enough there was also a Cup competition, which meant a total of 399 games played!

Spurs, represented by fans Chris Wrigley and Simon Jackson (pictured), did extremely well considering that Simon had hardly ever played the game before! With 20 victories in total, including convincing 4-0 wins over Arsenal and Manchester United and a 3-0 win over Chelsea, Spurs finished seventh and reached the quarter finals of the Cup going out to eventual winners Liverpool! Leicester City were crowned Premiership Champions with a seven point margin over Midlands rivals Wolves.

Owing to the success of the event, the organisers are hopeful of repeating it next year and if you would like to make a donation, please send a cheque payable to The Leukaemia Research Fund to Andy Murray, 19 Manor Park North,Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 8DD.
