Striking the balance

Benoit Assou-Ekotto insists we must be prepared to improve defensively ahead of Sunday’s visit of champions Chelsea to the Lane in the Premier League.

The left-back admitted our attacking nature is a joy for fans to watch, as in our 3-3 Champions League draw with FC Twente on Tuesday, but knows we cannot leave ourselves so open against our London rivals.

Benoit is well aware how important this clash against the Blues is with only six points separating the five teams at the top of the table.

But the Cameroon international has belief in our pedigree after recent victories against the likes of table toppers Arsenal and in-form Liverpool.

He said: “If we want to be in the top four at the end of the season and qualify for the Champions League, we have to beat the big teams like Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

“At the moment we are doing that well, so hopefully it will be the same with Chelsea.

“It was a very open game in Holland but it’s never good to concede three goals. If we do that against Chelsea, I’m not sure if we can come back in the game.

“Even if we play away from home, we don’t play to defend, which is great stuff for us. But we have to defend very well and attack like we did on Tuesday.”
