Martin Jol hasn't given up hope of qualifying for Europe - and he's hoping for a favour from his old mate Stuart Pearce next week.
Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough means the Teeside outfit will clinch seventh spot and a UEFA Cup place if they avoid defeat at Manchester City next Sunday.
However, City's win at Villa on Saturday means they can also qualify.
If they beat Middlesbrough and we beat Blackburn at the Lane we'll all be level on 54 points - with City currently holding the upper hand on goal difference.
Head Coach Martin played with Pearce at Coventry City in the mid-1980s and smiled: "Middlesbrough play Manchester City next week and my friend Stuart Pearce is having a good spell.
"I played with him and he will fight until the last minute, and if he wins, he is in Europe and Middlesbrough have got nothing. That is the state of the competition at this moment.
"If City win 1-0 and we win three or 4-0, maybe we end up with a chance."
