But while Steffen admits that scoring goals during the preparation stage is 'fun', he feels it will have little bearing when it comes to putting down a marker for one of the striking slots come August 18.
"Of course it's going to build up your confidence a little bit if you start scoring early in the pre-season," said Steffen. "It's just important to get the fitness and to score goals is fun."
Steffen says he wouldn't like to go through pre-season without scoring goals, but is hoping to not score too many and apply a curious trade-off where friendly goals are concerned.
"I haven't done it so far," he says of a pre-season without goals. "I've been scoring quite a few goals during pre-seasons, so hopefully I'm not scoring too many this year so I can score more in the League."
Our Norwegian hitman has spent most time in Sergei Rebrov's company during pre-season games, but is not offering any predictions as to who the favoured strikers will be.
"We've been trying a few different things all the time. Trying new systems, so it is not obvious who is going to play up front yet so you just have to keep on doing our best in pre-season.
"It's the first season with Glenn, so he's obviously going to have a good look at you in pre-season. He knows what we stand for anyway, he's seen us in the League before - so it's a case of doing the best you can and hoping you are the one to start."
Steffen Iversen proved that there is no lingering damage to his head by nodding the winner at Wycombe - and now he hopes to force his way into the starting X1 that begins the season proper.
