Steffen Freund feels we can take heart from our away performances this season as we look for a win at FC Basel to take us into the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The Swiss champions impressed in the first leg of our quarter-final at the Lane last week.

They took a 2-0 lead in the first half but we fought back to level the tie at 2-2 with goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Now we meet again for a place in the last four at St Jakob Park on Thursday night.

Our away form has been impressive in the Premier League this season – nine wins and just five defeats in 16 matches – while the 4-1 loss in the Round of 16 at Inter Milan was the first defeat of our Europa League campaign.

“We’re playing against a strong team with good individual quality and we know it will be difficult,” said Steffen, our Assistant Head Coach.

“But we are confident because we’ve played so well away from home all season.

“If we perform how we know we can, we have a good chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

“We’ve played 11 matches in this competition and we’ve been strong throughout. Okay, Inter Milan was difficult, but we managed to come back at Lyon in the last minute.

“Now it’s the same against Basel. Maybe we can score in the last minute again! We certainly have the desire and determination to do it.”
