We faced Aston Villa away in our final game of 2001, led through a Les Ferdinand goal and had chances to finish the game off. However, a late penalty denied Kasey Keller a clean sheet in his first Premiership appearance for the club.
Steffen says the same positive approach to the game must be adopted once again to reap the points this time around.
"It is always really hard to play at Villa," said Steffen. "I think last time we played a good game and it was only a late penalty that gave them the chance to come back.
"We could have won it and finished the game before though. With the same attitude and performance we have a good chance on Saturday.
"We have to be really strong in the beginning especially, to go at the same pace and win the battles that you have to win in England."
One fact Steffen never tires of repeating is that there are now easy pickings available in the Premiership.
"It is always the same answer, in the Premier League there are never easy games - especially when you play away.
"We are not at the level to think we will go away and win every game and that is why we have to be brave in away games. Hopefully we can improve on this."
Steffen Freund says the team will be striving to go two points better than last season when we travel to Villa Park today.
