We made eight changes to the side which beat Cardiff in the Premier League just two days beforehand, with goals from Jermain Defoe (2), Paulinho and Nacer Chadli sealing our passage into the Fourth Round.
Assistant Head Coach Steffen praised the lads who came into the side – and was pleased to see Paulinho bag his second goal in three days.
“Full compliments to all the players, what a performance!” enthused Steffen. “We changed eight players from the last game and it’s great to see we have so many quality players.
“I’m really happy for Jermain Defoe, he’s now the number five in the all-time goalscoring list for Tottenham Hotspur, Nacer is back and scored, Paulinho scored again, Lewis Holtby is king of the assists – what a performance from the whole team.”
Steffen added that he was pleased to see Vlad Chiriches slot into our defence and play his part in our eighth clean sheet of the season.
“It’s great to see him, a great performance from the first minute,” said Steffen after the Romanian international completed his first 90 minutes in our colours. “It’s always difficult to play well straight away and I think they created one chance after a mistake, that shows how strong Vlad played, plus Jan and later Michael. That’s how strong our centre-halves are. That’s eight clean sheets out of nine.”
There was also a first competitive start for left-back Zeki Fryers on Tuesday – and Steffen was glad to see the youngster’s hard graft finally paying dividends: “He deserved that start, I’m really happy for him. He worked hard in pre-season, came to Hong Kong with us, now he’s part of the first team. He played well.”
