Star man: Dietmar Hamman

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Steffen Freund prepares for a battle of the midfield enforcers with a player he much admires — his friend and fellow countryman Dietmar Hamman.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The Liverpool man has found himself in the spotlight recently, most notably for being turned inside-out by his own team-mate Steven Gerrard during England’s thumping of Germany in Munich. Not many people would have relished being in Hamman’s boots when he returned to training at Melwood to reunite with seven of the England contingent after that.
But the gritty midfielder has not let the experience affect his club form and Liverpool’s favoured midfield pairing have clicked nicely back into gear as the Reds season appears to be back on an upward turn.
In Steffen, Hamman certainly has an admirer and, as a midfield anchorman, Steff perhaps sees a bit of himself in the former Bayern Munich player.
“I look forward to it,” said Steffen. “I have played against him for the last three years while he has been at Newcastle and Liverpool.
“He’s the balance of the team I think. He is in the middle of the park, he organises the defence, and if he can go forward he is always dangerous around the 18-yard box.
“He has a very good shot and I like to see him play because he is a very important player for Liverpool. If you look over the last few seasons he has always played and you see how important he is.
“Maybe we play sometimes in a similar role, but I think he is more of a player that goes forward a little bit more to create chances for the team.
“I’m more of a defensive midfielder who reads the game without the ball and helps the team without the ball. But we play the same position and it depends what the manager wants.”
Being acutely aware of footballing heritage in England, driving through the Shankly Gates with Spurs is a journey Steffen relishes.
“I really look forward to playing at Anfield, it is a special stadium with a lot of tradition.
“It is a very traditional game, Liverpool against Tottenham, and I am very proud to play the game.”
