Next up in our 'Staff 7' Q&A interview is Paul Miles, one of the men responsible for the editorial side of the Official Spurs Website...
How did you get into the job?
I started as a trainee journalist on the job at the Peterborough Herald & Post. I was lucky. You don't see that these days. I had trials at Peterborough United, didn't get in after a couple of months, but I also liked the idea of sports journalism and a friend of the family knew the editor of the local paper and organised a meeting. It all started from there and at 19, I was literally trained on the job as a sports journalist from day to day.
How did you end up at Spurs?
I worked on local papers in the Huntingdon and Peterborough area and then onto the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, where I covered local football, ice hockey and speedway. I moved to the Tottenham Journal and started covering Spurs in 1998 and then onto the website when it relaunched in May 2000.
What is the best thing about working at Spurs?
We are all wannabe Premiership footballers but sports writing was second on my list when I was asked what I wanted to do at school. I was lucky and now I'm working day to day in that environment. The players and staff at the club are fantastic with us as well, and that's the most important thing.
What about favourite moments at Spurs so far?
Watching David Ginola throughout my early days on the Journal was a pleasure, especially the 1998-99 season, getting to know Steffen Freund well through his diary pieces, beating Chelsea 5-1 and being involved with the website's constant development.
What advice would you give to budding sports journalists?
Pass your qualifications at school, especially English and try and get on a good media studies course. Referring to my own experience though, go and talk to the local paper, get your name known, see if they will let you watch how they work for a period of time - get to understand it all works. You could even offer to do reports on the local non-league team, anything to get a foot in the door.
Finally, what about all these pies you are meant to continually eat?
Ignore all those vicious rumours - as you can see in the picture above, I'm strictly a salad, pasta and white meat man.
