Fredi Kanoute came off the bench to finally break the deadlock with a free-kick after 77 minutes before Robbie Keane wrapped it up with he second in injury time.
Martin reflected: "We did well defensively even though we had the initiative.
"Ledley King did well again and Naybet is a very experienced player with so many successes in his career and he's a leader.
"You have to keep your shape and you have to give credit to Browny, he was terrific and Michael Carrick - they worked so hard even though Fulham had a spare man in midfield.
"Michael Carrick is getting better and better. He's a leader in midfield and I'm happy with him because one of the main things in a football team is to get players who are young and developing. He's doing that.
"I'm a happy man because it was a big win for us."
