Tottenham v Manchester United

Manchester United need to dust themselves down and attempt to bounce back at the weekend following their devastating last-gasp defeat at the gleeful hands of Deportivo La Coruna on Tuesday night.

But a trip to White Hart Lane will evoke further bad memories as the champions crashed 3-1 at the same venue on the final day of last season. An irrelevant result for all concerned on the day admittedly, but a psychological boost to a Spurs side that has yet to produce back-to-back wins this term.

However, the north Londoners more than matched Liverpool in their last league outing, despite leaving Merseyside empty-handed, and are showing signs of improvement under Glenn Hoddle's watchful gaze.

The former England manager remained philosophical about the team's future after the narrow defeat at Anfield: "What we have to do is become more clinical. We played well here and against Chelsea but we've got nothing out of the games. That's the next piece of the jigsaw."

Les Ferdinand posed the greatest threat on the day and tested Jerzy Dudek with two drives, but he also fired the same number wide of the mark and has now landed just a third of his shots on target this season- the same disappointing rate as the entire Spurs team.

The hosts would do well to take a leaf out of the visitors' book when it comes to finishing power. United have scored twice as many goals as Tottenham and have forced the'keeper to try and stop an unrivalled 58% of their efforts.

In a bid to stop the Red Devils in their tracks, Hoddle now has defender Dean Richards at his disposal. The former Saint made half-a-century of defensive actions for the south coast club and won 82% of his tackles, proving that he will be a valuable asset to a side that has conceded as many goals as they have scored.

However, Richards may find himself under persistent pressure should he make his debut on Saturday, as United are far superior in possession than the Lilywhites. In fact only Arsenal have recorded a better pass completion rate in the opposition half than Alex Ferguson' s side this year.

Match referee: J. Winter

This ref has handed out two red cards and 19 yellow cards in just four games. The refs say they are just following ze orders; the players get cards rescinded; the managers have an excuse as to why they lost, leaving the paying fans to suffer as games are ruined by dismissals. The beautiful game eh?
