Tottenham v Manchester City

After making a steady start to the 2000-01 campaign, alarm bells started ringing at White Hart Lane after Tottenham lost to newly promoted Charlton last weekend. They face another of the Premiership new boys on Saturday when they play host to Manchester City.

Against Charlton, Spurs' main problem was that they failed to convert any of the gilt-edged goalscoring opportunities that they created. But it was not a one-off event. Profligacy in front of goal has been a recurring theme of the Lilywhites' season so far. George Graham's team have hit the target with a measly 37% of their shooting attempts - the second lowest rating in the division - and will have to improve upon this figure if they are to pick up all three points against City.

In contrast, Joe Royle's side have been highly effective in front of goal. They have been accurate with 47% of their efforts and with Paulo Wanchope leading the line, they should cause the Tottenham defence plenty of problems.

The Costa Rican international has already fired 13 goal-bound shots this term - the second-highest total in the Premiership - and could be worth a flutter with SpursBET at 13/2 to score the opening goal on Saturday.

Despite his team's inadequacies up front, Graham has managed to instil some of the work ethic so commonly associated with his brand of football. Perhaps the greatest exponent of this at the Lane is Steffen Freund. Although the German is not considered the most gifted of footballers, he has made up for this with his fiercely competitive edge and has had a hugely successful career, winning European Cup, at both club and international level.

So far this term, Freund has won 19 challenges - the seventh-highest total in the top flight but if you think he is due to mis-time and earn a yellow card then 11/8 is on offer.

Tottenham still have a 100% home record this season and will expect to extend that run on Saturday. And while Royle's team will undoubtedly pose a threat going forward, Spurs should have enough quality to take all three points, a feat that they are quoted at 4/6 to achieve.

Matchday Referee: S. Bennett

Like his janitorial namesake from Tony Hart's TV programs in the 80s, Mr Bennett is generally a kind man. Only two other referees are stricter on average and only one other Premiership official has stopped play on fewer occasions.
