Tim Sherwood v
Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard and Tim Sherwood will be two of the key figures in the midfield battle at White Hart Lane this Sunday, so Opta had a look at how the former and current England players have been doing this season.

The 19-year old Liverpool man has been using his tackling ability well for the Reds this season and has got stuck into 46 challenges, winning 67% of them. Such a willingness to work has endeared him to fans of both his club and country. 31-year old Sherwood is less popular with the fans at his club and has won 61% of attempted challenges - perhaps some increased vocal support might encourage him to get involved a bit more.

It should also be noted that Gerrard has been playing at right-back for Liverpool in some of his league appearances for the Anfield side. Against Everton, the local lad went in for nine tackles and won seven of them with a passionate display.

But these two players have more to offer their respective teams than just huff and puff. Gerrard has recorded a respectable 70% passing accuracy, while Sherwood has found a team-mate with 78% of his distribution with his massive 708 passes - only three other players in the Premiership have attempted more than the ex-Blackburn player. And if Spurs are going to improve, then it's that kind of willingness to stroke the ball about will help them.

Sherwood's willingness to shoot is laudable and he has fired off 18 efforts, but only a third of those have hit the target and yielded just the one goal. The Liverpool youngster has hit the target with half of his 12 efforts and has bagged two goals. This figure is double the number he managed in the whole of last season and perhaps an indication that Liverpool are responding to Gerard Houllier's call for more goals from the midfielders.

The odds on Gerrard scoring in the game are 11/2 , while SpursBET are offering 4/1 on Sherwood to find the back of the net for the second time this season.

Liverpool have failed to win at White Hart Lane in their last three visits and currently Tottenham are unbeaten at home, having only dropped two points - the same home record as Liverpool themselves. Crisis? What crisis? The Reds will have to put on a good performance if they are to get anything out of this game and Gerrard will be one of the vital components their side. Fighting with him all the way will be Sherwood. It should be an interesting clash.
