Tottenham and Leeds will probably look back on the season with a little sigh and idle thoughts of what might have been. But for Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Fowler, the season might not end in May and there is still a huge amount to play for.

One of the reasons that Fowler went to Leeds was that he wanted to go to the World Cup and his strike against Italy recently will have done his chances no harm at all. This season the former Liverpool player has hit the target with a respectable 52% of his shots and scored with 18% of them, which is a pretty good indication that Fowler is more than capable of causing problems to any defence that he faces.

Sadly for Sheringham he can't compete with that. The Tottenham forward has hit the target with 42% of his efforts which is not too bad, but has only scored with 9% of his shots and you would expect more from a player of his obvious class. Teddy might point out, however, that he has hit the woodwork four times this season and no player has been denied by post and bar more times than him.

Tottenham fans will point to the creative work off the ball that Sheringham is renowned for and with three assists and 42 key passes that lead to a clear scoring chance he has proved that despite his age there is nothing wrong with his reading of the game. Fowler has set up three goals this season and created a further 17 clear chances for team-mates.

The fact that Fowler has successfully completed 69% of his passes compared to the Spurs striker's 77% would go some way to explaining why Sheringham has been the better support striker this season. Although Fowler has been deadlier, it is widely expected that England will start with Michael Owen and one other striker up front and the Tottenham player's creative ability will stand him in good stead for that role.

England aside, this game will be vital to Leeds if they are going to keep fighting for a place in the Champions League and given that this season there are four places available for the first time it could go right down to the last day.

Fowler and Sheringham have always had a huge influence on whoever they are playing for and this game could have big repercussions for both players. With Tottenham reportedly in the market for a new striker and Leeds already having five top forwards on their books there will be a lot to play for within the individual teams as well as the last minute scramble for World Cup places. Both Fowler and Sheringham have the class to excel for club and country.
