Two strikers who have come through the non-league ranks line up against each other in this capital clash at White Hart Lane on Saturday. Les Ferdinand who began his career with Hayes is in devastating form at present after notching the quickest hat trick by a Premiership player this season.

His three headers inside nine first-half minutes helped Tottenham progress into the semi-finals of the Worthington Cup after a thumping 6-0 win over Bolton last Tuesday. Manager Glenn Hoddle took him off at half time to rest him for this key match in the FA Barclaycard Premiership.

Former Stevenage forward and part-time carpenter Barry Hayles was a boyhood Spurs fan and will relish his first game at White Hart Lane as a professional. But the 29-year-old striker will have no time for sentiment as he displayed when he headed past Neil Sullivan in the Worthington Cup clash between the sides last month.

Battling hard to ensure his place in the side when £12 million man Steve Marlet returns from injury, Hayles netted both Fulham goals in the 2-0 win over Everton last weekend and his physical presence has unsettled many top defences in recent weeks.

Hayles has netted with 30% of his shots this season — a better ratio than any other player involved at White Hart Lane. Furthermore he has been more accurate than Ferdinand forcing opposing goalkeepers into action with 10 out of his 14 goal attempts to date.

But the Tottenham man who recently turned 35 has performed well to establish himself as first choice in Hoddle’s team in front of Ukrainian hotshot Sergei Rebrov. Rebrov has found his first-team opportunities limited at White Hart Lane due to Ferdinand’s successful partnership with Teddy Sheringham.

The former England striker claimed his one goal assist of the season when he beat Marcel Desailly and cut the ball back invitingly for Sheringham to score against Chelsea in September, and Ferdinand’s 74% passing accuracy is slightly better than Hayles’ distribution in the Premiership this term.

However if you think Hayles is the man to help the Cottagers’ to their first win at White Hart Lane in 53 years and leapfrog Spurs in the table, then go for the away side at 3/1 with champion bookmakers surreySPORTS.

The striking duel between Ferdinand and Hayles is sure to play a large part in an entertaining London derby and Fulham fans will hope their man can come out on top with his first goal on the road since last March.
