Katie fires ladies into quarter-finals of League Cup

Katie O'Leary kept Spurs Ladies on the crest of a wave in cup competitions on Sunday.

Katie O'Leary - hit a hat-trick against C&KRi Soobadoo - outstanding return

The striker bagged a hat-trick in the 5-2 win at C&K Basildon as Spurs progressed into the quarter-finals of the FA Women's Premier League Cup.

The team is very much alive in all four cup competitions. Last week's win at Gillingham moved them into the last four of the Ryman Cup and they are already in the last eight of the London FA Capital Women's Cup, where they face West Ham in January.

The prestigious FA Women's Cup will also follow in the New Year.

O'Leary fired Spurs into an early lead against C&K at Canvey Island but the home side soon levelled after a defensive mistake.

The scorer of the second goal is still being debated - Jenna Schillaci or Wendy Martin - but there was no mistaking two outstanding finishes from O'Leary to complete her hat-trick and put Spurs out of sight at 4-1 in the second half.

C&K did respond for 4-2 before O'Leary turned provider for Lucy Loomes to make it 5-2 and claim her second goal in two starts.

Manager Karen Hills was particularly pleased with how the squad stepped up against C&K with a number of players out - Maya Vio (injured), Kelley Blanchflower (cup-tied), Sophie McLean and Lucia Leon were unavailable, Avilla Bergin was rested from the starting line-up after an international appearance for Northern Ireland and Karen could only field one Women's Super League player, so Megan Wynne had to sit it out with Loomes starting.

"It was great to see Ronnell Humes, a young player from the development squad, come in and do so well and Ri Soobadoo was outstanding in midfield," said Karen.

"The players stepped up and that's what you want to see. It will certainly make my job more difficult!

"It was also a superb hat-trick from Katie and she's hit it off immediately with Lucy, they link-up really well in the forward areas. Lucy makes lots of clever runs and they are on the same wavelength."
