Juniors get Motty masterclass!

Two youngsters were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from the legendary John Motson before commentating on one of our games.

One Hotspur Junior Member Reggie Bodle was one of the lucky winners of a competition run in partnership with Disney’s Aim High initiative.

Part one saw Reggie complete a masterclass with ‘Motty’, who passed on his wisdom from five decades of commentating on some of football’s biggest matches.

Reggie was then invited back to the Lane where he put his new skills into action, commentating live at our game against Newcastle United last month.

Motty is one of the most instantly recognisable voices in UK sport. He has been synonymous with football in the UK since the early 1970s, regularly appearing on TV and radio during a career that has seen him lend his voice to over 1,500 games, including countless major international tournaments and finals.

He said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a long career doing something I love, so it’s an absolute pleasure to be given the opportunity to pass on some of my experience to budding young commentators.”

Speaking about the experience, Reggie said: “I entered the competition back in August but didn’t think for one minute that I’d win. I was lost for words when I heard the good news and couldn’t wait to meet John Motson and go to the Lane.

“When I met Motty in October, he told me about how important it is to prepare before commentating on a match, so when the day came I turned up with lots of facts and stats about the players, teams and the game itself.

“I had mixed feelings about doing live commentary – I was excited about what was going to happen but also nervous about it as well.

“Once I arrived at the stadium, soaking up the atmosphere was amazing. The referees that I had seen only on TV walked right past me!

“We sat down in a TV studio where me and another competition winner from Disney were going to be commentating during the game.

“Once the match kicked off, the first five minutes were almost silent because we were both so nervous, but we soon settled in. Before we knew it, it was half-time, and by the second half we were much more in the swing of things and we were chatting away like professionals – just like John Motson!

“It was a fantastic day and one that I will never forget.”
