Spurs In Seville: Day 1
Monday August 2
FOLLOWING a slog around the M25, the Spurs party convened at Heathrow Airport in readiness for the 4.40pm Iberia flight to Seville.
As always when a big group has to go through the check-in procedure, we were at the airport in plenty of time, not least to give Roy the kitman plenty of time to book in his 23 huge bags of gear.
Into departures and it is always interesting to see how different people fill their time before moving to the gate when called. It was somewhat impressive to see Erik Edman not wasting a minute, diving straight into WH Smith to pick up a London A-Z, which he then studied with great concentration. Some of the management and staff, however, spent the waiting period in slightly more enjoyable fashion - a rather nice seafood bar situated in the lounge.
An Irish member of the airport staff was particularly glad to get the chance of a meeting with Robbie Keane when we got to the departure gate. Robbie may be injured, but he is out here with the team for the Kappa Cup and will continue to receive treatment on his ankle.
On to what was a problem-free flight that took two hours, 20 minutes. Only one seating reshuffle was needed to allow the vertically blessed Dagui Bakari an isle seat, otherwise his hair would have been brushing up against the overhead air conditioners.
Continuing the passing time theme, a little wheeze in the arrivals hall is occasionally to check out a few passport pictures - rarely a snap anyone is particularly proud of. Mind you, Jermain Defoe doesn't mind offering a glimpse of his, while Philip Ifil's definitely needs an update as he was about 14 when his was taken!
We arrived at out hotel base at about 9.15pm local time and the temperature was still about 30 degrees. Straight into dinner and then off to bed - breakfast at 7.30am and training an hour later in the morning.
