Proudly supporting Special Olympics in Melbourne

Posted on 13 June 2016  - 08:00

As part of our trip to Melbourne, Australia, to compete in the 2016 International Champions Cup (ICC) next month, the Club will be continuing its long-standing work with Special Olympics.

The charity aims to provide sporting opportunities for athletes with learning disabilities throughout the world, with international and regional summer and winter Games regularly taking place.

Tottenham Hotspur has been a global partner of Special Olympics since 2009 as well as working closely with Special Olympics GB and its Unified Football programme on a local level through Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

The Club’s Global Coaching team will be delivering a football clinic for local learning disabled athletes in Melbourne, in partnership with Special Olympics Asia-Pacific.

This follows on from similar clinics run alongside recent First Team pre and post season visits to Seattle, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney and Denver.

Grant Cornwell MBE, our Head of Global Coaching and CEO of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “We are proud to once again be working with Special Olympics alongside the First Team’s visit to Melbourne in July.

“Our long-term work with Special Olympics is a great example of how the Club is able to use the power of sport, in particular football, to create life-changing opportunities for people around the world.

“We aim to provide an unforgettable experience to the young people we will be working with in Melbourne, giving them the chance to work alongside our Global Coaching team, improve their skills and learn how to play The Spurs Way.”

In addition, a group of First Team players will be visiting the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne to meet with patients and hand out gifts from the Club.

The Royal Children’s Hospital is an existing charity partner of AIA in Australia and a series of fundraising activities will be run by our shirt sponsors throughout the week.

Our Official Supporters Club in the region, Oz Spurs, will also be holding a number of fundraising events during our visit for their partner charity, Football United, an organisation that uses football to promote social development.
