Atletico’s Diego Godin grabbed the only goal of the game towards the end of a first half which we largely dominated.
It was the second of our two games at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground following Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Juventus and, once again, there were opportunities for a handful of our young players to gain experience in a senior environment under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino.
“We’ve had two great friendly matches and really enjoyed our time together. We lost the games but we were really unlucky against Atletico. We created chances and played well. They are one of the best teams in the world at the moment, Champions League finalists, great opponents and we’re a little disappointed to lose. You get days like this in football. We played well and we’re a strong team – everyone can see that.”
“I thought we did really well, especially in the first half. The first 15 or 20 minutes we dominated, they are a class side with experienced players but I thought we were exceptional. In the grand scheme of things we shouldn’t have lost it. We had the better chances and probably should have won the game. They won from a set-piece which I gave away and I’ll learn from that. They are a class side and you can’t afford to give a team who is that good on set pieces a chance to score.”
“I thought we played quite well. It was a different game to Juventus, we found it easier to play out (from the back) and that helped us, we built better from the back and played forward. We were a bit unlucky with the goal. We had chances and Josh (Onomah) and Coco (Erik Lamela) hit the woodwork in the first half as well. We were unlucky on the night.”
“This trip has been good – I’ve got to know my team-mates and I’ve enjoyed it. I know the gaffer has worked us hard but it’s been great to be here. It is important for me to get to know my team-mates better and this trip has helped me do that – that’s how you build relationships and team spirit so it’s been really good for that. We can only take positives from this trip – we’ve got some good players here and we’ve played some good football. There are things we can learn from too but we’ll get back on the training ground and work on that.”
