'Youngsters can be proud' - Michel

The young players who starred against Juventus in our first outing in Melbourne on Tuesday have been given a solid pat on the back by the elder statesman of our squad.

Goalkeeper Michel Vorm, who, at 32 years of age is the oldest member of our playing staff, was impressed by elements of what he saw from our rising stars as we crossed swords with the Italian giants in front of a passionate crowd at the MCG.

Indeed, seven players made their first senior appearance for us over the course of the International Champions Cup clash - attacking midfielder Marcus Edwards being the youngest at just 17.

He was joined by central defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers and Dominic Ball, versatile player Will Miller who acted as a makeshift left-back in the first half, midfielders Anton Walkes and Luke Amos, plus Shayon Harrison up front.

Having trained and played alongside those lads in addition to some of our senior campaigners since returning for pre-season at the start of July, Michel echoed the sentiments of Manager Mauricio Pochettino in his assessment of their displays Down Under.

"I'm very proud of the youngsters," he said. "For most of the guys I think it was very special to play in Australia against opponents who have been the best team in Italy for the last five years.

"Obviously, everyone wants to do the best they can and they can be proud of themselves.

"You have to learn from these kinds of games and you can see that in the first half, Juventus scored from the mistakes that we made. That's football at a high level.

"Mauricio told them to forget any mistakes and he said 'make sure you play with the right mentality, go out there and do your best.'

"That's the only thing you can do because if you think too much then it doesn't go well.

"I've seen a lot of good things so far and I think that's very important. This has been a great experience for the boys to take with them."
