We conceded both goals inside the first 15 minutes but gradually improved before dominating the second half at the MCG. Erik Lamela pulled a goal back and Juve goalkeeper Norberto Neto was forced to keep out another effort from the Argentinian and Shayon Harrison’s late drive.

On the game - his first in public for the Club
“It felt good to finally play my first game in public for Spurs. It was tough in the first half. We had some problems with pressing them and then when had the ball it was difficult to find the free man. It didn’t really go how we planned before the game. I didn’t see the rest of the second half because we had to do some work inside. It’s pre-season! I played the first 15 minutes and came in. We did a good job in the second half.”

On facing Atletico Madrid on Friday
“Today we played against the Serie A winners and now we play against Atletico, the Champions League finalists. It’s another good test for us.”

On what Mauricio Pochettino said to the younger players
“We are Tottenham Hotspur and we're a big club so we need to treat them the same as you treat everyone. Of course they're less experienced but you want to bring them to a certain level so I think we work the same as always. The whole team wants to make it a relaxed environment and he told them all to enjoy it. They can be proud of themselves.”michel200x300

On pre-season games when he was younger
“To be honest, I never played against such big teams in pre-season. I will never forget my first game for the national team in Holland. Stekelenburg broke his finger the day before the game against Scotland and it was our last qualifier for the World Cup in 2010 and Scotland has a chance to qualify if they won. I think it was at Ibrox and it was full and I had to play. I will never forget that players like Andre Ooijer came to me and said to have a good game but also to enjoy it and that's what the gaffer said today to these guys. Of course they (youngsters) have to play their game but they have to enjoy it as well. For me, at that time in 2009 it was an amazing experience and you never forget games like that in your life. For some of the lads here aged just 18, 19 and 20 years old to play games like this is such an advantage for the rest of their careers.”

Victor Wanyama

“It was a tough game against Juventus. We started a little shaky but as the game went on, we improved. Atletico Madrid is another tough test for us so hopefully we’ll recover well and then come back again and show what we can do. It’s going well for me so far.

"The lads have been great and I’m looking forward to a good season.”
