The young midfielder took a deliberate step back from the action as Danny Rose crossed from the left and his instinct proved right as Joleon Lescott’s header came straight out to him just inside the box.
He still had plenty to do though and the finish was exquisite, deft control on his thigh before a full volley into the bottom corner.
“It was a natural instinct to hold my run a bit on the edge of the box because I felt it might come back to me,” he said. “Luckily it did and then I slotted it into the corner.
“All the lads were brilliant and the win is most important, but it’s great to score here to repay the fans who have helped me settle in so well.”
Below: Dele speaks to Spurs TV after the win against Villa
Dele fired us into a 2-0 lead at half-time after Mousa Dembele’s early goal but Villa found a response on 79 minutes when Jordan Ayew’s shot was deflected home.
Villa had a couple of chances but we were back in control when Harry Kane struck in added time to secure the points.
“We knew they weren’t going to make it easy for us but we made it a little more difficult for ourselves than we needed to,” added Dele.
“I thought we looked comfortable until they scored. Even at half-time at 2-0 up we knew we needed to get another goal to make it easier but they scored that next goal. We showed resilience to dig in and get the three points.”
