Steed Malbranque made his debut and was joined by fellow debutants Andy Barcham and Dorian Dervite. Michael Dawson was the only survivor from the starting XI against Chelsea on Sunday, Edgar Davids captained the side and there was a return from injury for Lee Young-Pyo.


1min: Good start for Barcham, Ifil cleared and the young striker showed good pace to get between Vale's central defenders, that forced Goodlad out and Barcham poked the ball past him, tight angle and his attempted cross blocked.

1min: From corner, Murphy aimed kick to near post where Dawson connected but effort deflected wide for another corner.

4mins: Another corner from Murphy aimed to the near post, Huddlestone this time made the connection but couldn't guide header on target.

6mins: Murphy spread play wide to Ifil, acres of space on right, whipped in great cross that Defoe got to first, volley blocked.

7mins: Vale's first attempt, Sonner got hold of shot from distance but ball always rising.

8mins: Quick feet centrally from Davids, got away from Harsley, got hit from 25 yards deflected wide for corner.

10mins: CHANCE. Miscontrol from Constantine fell completely wrong-footed Dawson, ball fell kindly for Smth who dragged shot wide.

11mins: CHANCE. Malbranque cruised away from Sonner centrally, fed ball into Defoe's feet right side of box, smashed ball a yard wide.

14mins: SAVE. Murphy took short corner to Lee, went for shot to near post that Goodlad did well to palm off the line, rebound fell to Dervite, cross blocked.

14mins: CHANCE. Murphy drilled cross deep where Dervite was lurking from corner, difficult chance half-volleyed over from eight yards.

16mins: Murphy linked up with Ifil again, this time the full-back bombing on from his own half, went for glory from 30 yards and fired high and wide.

20mins: Smith fizzed in cross from left that Constantine took well on his chest, Dawson and Dervite tight to him and could only poke over.

21mins: CHANCE. Dervite clipped lovely pass forward to Barcham, he controlled well, lost it, won it back and cracked effort from 20 yards that Walker threw himself in to block.

23mins: SAVE. Moment of magic from Defoe, spun away from two challenges midway in Vale half, spotted Goodlad off his line and looked to have got attempted lob right until the keeper scampered back and tipped around the post.

29mins: Ifil's clearance fell straight to Harsley, 20 yards out, central, had time to set himself but that also gave time for Dawson to throw himself in to block.

30mins: CLOSE. Huddlestone won possession off Sonner on half-way, carried 20 yards and unleashed drive that zipped a yard wide.

37mins: Moment of panic as Abbey's 30-yard free-kick deflected off Ifil, could have gone anywhere but thankfully it went into Cerny's hands.

38mins: Ifil's cross from right troubled Goodlad for a moment but keeper re-positioned himself to tip over.

41mins: YELLOW CARD - PORT VALE. Miles for foul on Malbranque.

42mins: Huddlestone's pass picked out Murphy's run from left ro right into box, ball wouldn't sit down to shoot and Abbey made fine tackle.

43mins: SAVE. Defoe cut in from left side of box, jinked past Walker and onto his left foot, powerful shot turned aside by diving Goodlad.

46mins: Davids let fly from 25 yards, shot skidded just wide.

47mins: YELLOW CARD - PORT VALE. Walker for foul on Barcham.

48mins: CLOSE. Vale's best effort to date, spectacular volley from Constantine angled just wide, although Cerny looked to have it covered.

55mins: SAVE. Malbranque squared to Defoe, he took one touch and hit shot from 25 yards that Goodlad tipped around the post at full stretch.

63mins: SUB. Lennon for Malbranque.

63mins: GOAL - PORT VALE. Constantine crept behind Dawson and hit a side-foot volley past Cerny from six yards.

70mins: SAVE. Berbatov almost scored with first touch, rising to meet Huddlestone's free-kick from the left bt Goodlad there again to palm out header.

71mins: Dervite tried his luck from 25 yards, drilled shot over.

73mins: SAVE. Berbatov made progress down the right, cut ball back for Defoe, he spun away from Pilkington but Goodlad there at near post to block shot.

77mins: Lennon in space down the left, cut into box, low cross just too far in front of Berbatov.

77mins: CHANCE. Defoe skipped away from Miles and Walker, into box, low left foot shot went just wide.

79mins: GOAL - SPURS. Identical goal to Dawson's against Chelsea on Sunday - this time Huddlestone's free-kick didn't get a touch, although Dervite was very close, and ball went in off far post.

84mins: CHANCE. Huddlestone led break from deep, Ghaly rolled into Defoe's feet, he spun away from Walker but lashed shot over from 14 yards.

86mins: YELLOW CARD - PORT VALE. Harsley for foul on Davids.

91mins: SAVE. Best of the lot from Goodlad, Ghaly's cross to the near post met by clever Berbatov flick that Goodlad somehow diverted from top corner.

98mins: GOAL. Cracker from Huddlestone. Berbatov did well to bring down Davids cross, laid back for Huddlestone to hammer home from 30 yards.
