Spurs 3-0 Tromso IL - JD reflects on double

Jermain Defoe revealed how practice made perfect after he scored twice in the 3-0 win against Tromso IL on Thursday night.

It was the striker’s second two-goal show in the Europa League this season as we made the perfect start in Group K.

Both goals really caught the eye.

Erik Lamela provided the first assist on his first start for us, a perfectly-weighted pass that JD dinked over advancing goalkeeper Marcus Sahlman.

Lewis Holtby matched that with a superbly-threaded pass that Jermain rolled past Sahlman for 2-0 inside half-hour.

Christian Eriksen rounded off the scoring with a superb strike five minutes from time, his first goal for us.

“The first time I went through on goal I tried to go between his (the goalkeeper’s) legs,” reflected Jermain on his first chance of the night, saved by Sahlman.

“So for the next one, I waited for him to go down and I thought ‘this time I’ll dink it’.

“Erik - what a ball! He was just waiting for my run, but we worked on that in training, the wingers coming inside and me making that run. I just had to finish.

“It was a good game, not always easy. If you look on paper you think ‘we should win this game’, but you’ve still got to turn up and move the ball and they made it difficult.

“It was important to get the early goal, I managed to do that and it’s a great performance.”

Jermain’s double took him to within one goal of joining George Hunt in joint-fifth place on our all-time goalscoring list. JD is now on 137, Hunt finished on 138.

Meanwhile, Jermain has now moved to within two goals of our all-time top goalscorer in European football, Martin Chivers, who registered 22.

“They are two legends of the club, and it looks like I might catch them, so I’m looking forward to that,” said JD.

“On a personal note, it’s something I’ve been thinking about.

“Everyone knows I’ve had a list of the club’s goalscorers stuck up in the house. It will be a good achievement.

“I would have loved a hat-trick but it’s all about winning the game.”
