The events at the Emirates are now well-documented and Gareth said the team ‘felt in control’ before Emmanuel Adebayor’s sending off in the 18th minute.
Ade had already opened the scoring but the Gunners hit back to lead 3-1 at the break and then 4-1 on the hour.
Playing in a 3-4-2 system, the 10 men still managed to put pressure on the Arsenal defence and Gareth fired home for 4-2 with 20 minutes.
We had a couple of chances to make it 4-3 but the home side had the final word in added time for 5-2.
“We started well, felt in control, got an early goal and the lads were confident that we’d see out the rest of the game or even take the game to them and score some more goals," said Gareth.
“It was obviously disappointing in the end but the lads showed spirit, we fought back and tried to attack at every chance.
“If the lads show that spirit in every game, with 11 men, I’m sure we’ll be fine.”
Asked how Ade was in the dressing room afterwards, Gareth added: “He’s down, disappointed and so are the rest of the lads. We just have to pick ourselves up from here and go again.”
