Mauricio Pochettino admitted he was disappointed with the nature of Southampton’s goals but praised the players for coming back twice to secure a 2-2 draw at St Mary’s on Saturday.

It was cat and mouse in the first half before Ryan Mason’s slip and a moment’s hesitation from Ben Davies allowed Graziano Pelle to open the scoring just before the half-hour.

However, we responded before half-time as Harry Kane flicked on Eric Dier’s cross and Erik Lamela headed past Kelvin Davis.

Into the second half and Southampton’s best spell as Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis went close before Pelle headed home Shane Long’s cross for 2-1 on 65 minutes.

We gathered ourselves again and hit back for the second time on 70 minutes as Eric threaded through a pass for Nacer Chadli to finish confidently for his 10th Premier League goal of the season and 12th in all competitions.

Both teams pushed for a winner and we enjoyed territorial advantage in the final 10 minutes before the home team pushed us back again in seven minutes added time and Jose Fonte headed just over in the final seconds.

“I’m a little disappointed because we conceded two easy goals and we made a mistake for the first goal, we need to improve on that,” said Mauricio.

“After that, we managed the game well, had 60 per cent possession of the ball and we have to recognise it was a tough game at Southampton.

“For me, it was also an emotional game but I say congratulations to the players because it was a difficult match, we were down twice and to come back twice showed character. Also, our supporters were brilliant again.”

Meanwhile, Mauricio had words of praise for Ryan, who held his hands up and took the blame for Southampton’s opener. “To be honest, a player like Ryan cares a lot, he doesn’t have to say sorry but that shows how he is.”
