I think that Ledley King should be able to play in whichever area suits him best. At present he can easily play in midfield or defence, so why does he need to only be groomed in one position?
I see King as the perfect replacement for Sol. He is a tall lad who is strong in the air - and that’s probably the weakest point in our defence after Sol's departure... If we have problems in the midfield it is always nice to know that King is capable of playing there also. But we have plenty of strong midfielders. I agree with several others here at "Sound Off" that there is no use in buying new defenders unless we're talking real world class. We have a strong reserve squad with many good young prospects for the future. If we want to hit the transfer market let us buy class. Like GH has done so fare: Teddy, Gus and "Bunjee".
I don't think Ledley has the ability to make the grade long term. He is very short of pace and as a midfielder he has already given more square balls than Ray Wilkins ever did. He may progress a defender but as midfield playmaker or someone who might stamp a bit of authority on the match. Forget it.
Keith Smithers: Midfield I think, with Gus and Davies, he will develop well. Leave the defending to Gardner and Young.
Let Ledley decide where he wants to play. Not sure if anyone remembers but when Sol first broke into the 1st team he was played in just about every possible position; centre back, left back, central midfield and striker. Ledley can play equally as well in central defence and central midfield. Besides all this, why should we be looking to replace Sol? Sure he was a good defender, good at tackling and getting himself in the way of goal, but for all his strengths Sol was not the greatest player with the ball at his feet. He will be missed to a degree, but now we should looking at bringing our youngsters like Ledley, Alton and Anthony Gardner through to the first team. I am forgetting Luke Young (probably because he is more like an hold hand in the first team now!). Make Teddy captain and be done with it.
Ledley should be allowed to develop naturally and whichever position suits him best will become apparent. Anyway, surely Anthony Gardner would be a more natural successor in the Campbell mould.
I saw Ledley play centre back for England under-21s a while ago and
I thought it was Sol in disguise. Definitely a great replacement, I fully agree with Adam Hall that we ain't short on centre backs. Just make sure his contract doesn't run out!
