Sound Off: Ref debate

Posted on 22 August 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Rob Deane: It was most disappointing to see Gary getting sent off for a great tackle, up until then he had been having a super game...who needs Campbell when you’ve got Ledley and Gary??? Poyet’s tackle was just a booking, nothing more, but Elleray hates Spurs - what can you do about that?

Rowena Bardon: Gary and Gus should not have been sent off. The ref on Saturday was poor, Monday's terrible and the ref has been poor in all the Sky live matches so far. If this is the standard for the season then teams had better double their squads now to allow for suspensions. I think it is about time the 4th Official had immediate use of video playback for important matters such as sendings off, penalties etc.

Stephanie Baharie: With regards to the sending off of Gary and Gus, I think the referee was out of order. Mind you saying that he didn't exactly have a good game from the point of view of either team. Hopefully, the decisions will be overturned. Gary definitely did not deserve to be sent off. Gus, well the tackle was a bad one, but again it certainly wasn't a red card offence.

If refs are supposed to be professional now, then maybe they should understand the consequences of that word. Anybody who made that many mistakes in any normal job would have been sacked by now.

I would definitely like to see football go with rugby, in that the refs have instant playback available and are then able to base their decisions accordingly.

Daniel Holladay: The worst case of refereeing ever? Surely a strong contender. There were so many mistakes it was unbelievable. It is fair to say that the referee cost us the game, but only after disallowing an Everton goal for no reason. The only real talking points from the game were related to the referee, that can not be right.

In today's game there is so much at stake that the poor decisions of one man can cost clubs massive amounts financially. Isn't it about time we fully explored the alternatives - two referees, video replays etc? Let’s hope that it doesn’t take half a season for refs to sort their act out like it usually does.

Colin Lockwood: Whilst the sendings off were harsh in the extreme. I am sure they will be reduced on appeal. Referees are entitled to a bad game as are players. What your question should relate to is the horror tackle by Taricco. Whilst I hope the FA do reduce the two reds, they should also impose a ban on Taricco, there is no excuse for attempting to end a players career. On a happier note, wasn’t the last 30 minutes rearguard magnificent?

David Lightfoot: Diabolical sending offs, But Ledley KIng was outstanding! But can I ask what happened to REBROV?? Is he injured?
