SPURS 3 WEST HERTS 2

THE club's first ever FA Cup tie ended in victory in a thrilling game in front of 2,000 people at Northumberland Park against Watford-based West Herts.

Spurs led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Peter Hunter and Donald Goodall who both profited from Ernie Payne's good work on the wing to give Spurs a comfortable advantage at the break.

However, in the second half West Herts came racing out of the blocks and within five minutes of the restart they pulled a goal back through Wright and then levelled the scores through Hobbs shortly after.

With the visitors firmly in the ascendancy, Spurs were firmly pinned back into their own half but managed to catch West Herts on the break when Archie Cubberley raced onto Goodall's neat pass and rolled the ball past King to seal the victory.

Spurs had good claims for a fourth goal ruled out when Eccles shot looked to have gone underneath the crossbar, however, the referee Mr Bisiter, adjudged the ball to have sailed over - a common mistake in the days of net-free goalposts.
