Sol stars in Sven's success

Posted on 1 March 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Sol Campbell captained the England side for the second half of Sven Goran Eriksson's triumphant first game in charge on Wednesday night.
Our super skipper hardly put a foot wrong in the 3-0 victory against Spain at Villa Park.
Big Sol took over the captain's armband from David Beckham at half-time as goals from Nicky Barmby, Emile Heskey and Ugo Ehiogu made it a perfect night for the new boss.
Afterwards an emotional Eriksson said: "Both the result and the performance pleased me. To win 3-0 is a good result. They created something but we deserved to win.
"The performance, if you take away the first 20 minutes, was very good. I am very pleased and would like to say thank you to the country and all the players and Steve (McClaren) and Peter (Taylor) and Tord (Grip) and the rest of the staff.
"It was my first time with the fans and they were marvellous. Maybe we had a few nerves early on but Spain have a very good team. It is not easy to control the game for 90 minutes.
"We created some very good chances. Just at the end of the game they got a penalty and created one chance more but we deserved it. It is difficult in the beginning to see new faces and learn the names. It went well. It was a good start."
Eriksson stressed again that those players who did not make his first England squad had a chance to force their way into the reckoning.
"It was very positive tonight but I've always said that all English players can come into the squad. The door is always open."
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
