'Sol is massive for us'

Posted on 27 November 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

As Les Ferdinand grabbed the headlines, Stephen Clemence was quick to heap praise on Sol Campbell after Saturday’s win against Leicester City.
Campbell’s return almost went unnoticed as Ferdinand stole the show with a hat-trick in the 3-0 win.
Our skipper had been out since September 19 and after just 65 minutes in the reserves, put his repaired shoulder to the ultimate test against Foxes with Trevor Benjamin and Ade Akinbiyi up front and Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart up for set-pieces.
Big Sol clearly relished the battle though and came off with a deserved clean sheet — our first shut-out since September 26.
Clemence said: “Sol is massive for us. He’s a great player and someone we have missed. In the last game the three young lads did well but to have him back in the team is a great boost. I think it sends a bit of fear down the opposition as well to see his name on the team sheet.”
Clemence also had his hands full — he just happened to be the player involved in what was a somewhat predictable dust-up with City’s Robbie Savage with only a minute on the clock. Savage is still booed by Spurs fans after his part in getting Justin Edinburgh sent off in the Worthington Cup Final and Saturday’s early scuffle hardly endeared him further.
It also set the tone for a feisty encounter that ended with Taggart receiving his marching orders for upending Stephen Carr in the second half.
Clemence added: “It was a tough game. We knew it was going to be a different game to Liverpool. Leicester try to make it very difficult, get everyone behind the ball and don’t leave a lot of space behind them so it’s like trying to get through two blocks.
“It was a battle but we got the right result and once we went in front I thought we played some great stuff.
“We’re particularly pleased with the three goals because they had only conceded one goal on their travels so to score three shows how well we’re playing.”
Listen to Stephen's thoughts by clicking here
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
