Spurs Player of the month, February - Jermain Defoe
Tottenham’s transfer dealings during the January transfer window appeared to pay dividends immediately with the arrival of Jermain Defoe at White Hart Lane.
The former West Ham man hit four goals in three appearances during February and is unsurprisingly the highest-ranked Tottenham player for the month in the Opta Index.
Defoe arrived at Tottenham with a reputation for debut goals, have scored in his first appearances for both West Ham and Bournemouth. Just 13 minutes into his Tottenham bow he ensured that this record would continue and the England Under-21 star has gone on to prove why he is so highly rated, by adding to this tally in his following appearances.
The four goals Defoe has scored have come from just eight shots — all of which have been on target. His strike rate of a goal from every other shot, can’t be bettered by any other regular striker in the Premiership and he is already halfway to matching his Premiership goal tally for last season. He is now the third-highest scorer at Tottenham this season and his presence has created fierce competition for places up front for Spurs which can only be good news. With Tottenham averaging four goals per game since Defoe joined, his presence has certainly created some spark on the pitch.
Fellow striker Robbie Keane is the second-highest-ranked Spurs player for February — just missing out on being player of the month for the third time in a row. Keane scored just one fewer goal than Defoe, but he still managed to maintain his incredible scoring record for 2004, which stands at seven goals in seven Premiership games. Only four strikers have hit more than the Irishman this season while his shooting accuracy of 64% is better than that of any of the top 10 goalscorers in the Premiership.
February proved to be quite a month for Ledley King as well. Not only did he put together a string of fine performances in midfield for Tottenham, but he also found recognition at his more accustomed position of centre-back for England. King’s impact as a midfielder for Spurs has been so impressive that manager David Pleat wants to continue playing him there. King was the most accurate passer in the Spurs side during the month, finding a team-mate with 74% of his passes while he also has more assists than any other Tottenham player during February.
