Simon says: It will be tough

Posted on 1 August 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Simon Davies admits he faces an uphill battle to be part of our starting line-up next season.
Our outstanding young midfielder shot into the limelight with a number of excellent displays at the end of last season — including a memorable performance in our thrilling finale against Manchester United.
But the arrival of Gus Poyet in the summer and the return to fitness of Darren Anderton and Steffen Freund has upped the competition for places in central midfield with Tim Sherwood, Oyvind Leonhardsen and Stephen Clemence also in the frame.
The 22-year-old was quoted in the national press on Monday admitting he didn’t expect to start many matches.
Simon clarified his position at Spurs Lodge this week. “People have asked me about next season and I’ve just been honest,” he said. “I’m not just going to say that I’m definitely going to play because I know it will be hard.
“These are great players to learn off and it will good for me in the future. I just know it will be a lot harder than last season.”
So did he get that selfish streak when Gus signed, knowing it would make it harder for him? “I suppose,” he admitted. “But it gives that extra competitive edge for places and makes everyone fight that little bit harder.
“It’s only good that the likes of Gus and Teddy have come in because it will make everyone else raise their stakes to try and get into the team.
“I just want to get as many appearances as possible and if I get a chance, to keep knocking on the door.”
At least the Welsh international has showed what he can do with four goals from 15 appearances last term.
He added: “I know the situation last year was a lot of injuries, that’s why I played and I did alright when I came in.
“Hopefully that will be enough to keep me involved this season but it will be harder with the players that have come in.
“The manager knows that if he puts me in he knows I can do a job. That is the most important thing to have come out of last season.”

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
