With 13 players missing, Steffen Iversen and Simon himself playing in unfamiliar positions, United might have expected a far easier ride than the decidedly uncomfortable one they got with only a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty proving the difference between the sides.
"You can't fault the lads' effort, we really battled hard, created a couple of chances and were unlucky to lose in the end," reflected Simon back at Spurs Lodge.
With such a mammoth injury list, the team on display worked tirelessly to ensure that not easy pickings were on offer. Discipline was called for and delivered.
"Exactly, down the right we had a centre forward playing in right midfield and I was playing right back. I thought we did well, we went out there with a defensive head on and Steffen in front of me was very disciplined.
"It turned out alright and I don't think we did too bad."
Simon Davies felt the patched up team deserved some reward for their huge collective efforts against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
