Sebastien Bassong reflected on Wednesday night's PAOK defeat and sighed: “It was our fault.”
Captain on the night, Seb couldn’t hide his disappointment after a poor start paved the way for PAOK’s 2-1 win and left our chances of progressing in the Europa League out of our hands.
PAOK were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes and it wasn’t until Kostas Stafylidis was sent off for handball on the goal-line in the 37th minute and Luka Modric pulled it back to 2-1 from the penalty spot that the game turned our way.
We dominated the second half but couldn’t find a way through as PAOK held on for their win.
The result left the Greek side top of Group A on 11 points, Rubin Kazan second on 10 and us third on seven. If PAOK and Rubin Kazan draw in the final match, we will go out.
“We started the game a bit sloppy and we were punished straight away, two goals in 15 minutes,” reflected Seb.
“You can’t afford to do that when you want to win a game. But that’s what happened and that was our fault.
“We made it very difficult for ourselves and allowed them to sit back and defend for their lives. They did that very well. We didn’t do enough and that’s it.
“We now have to go to Shamrock, do our jobs, get a win and then hope the result goes our way.”
