Newcastle flew out of the traps with Craig Bellamy's pace a real threat early on but we grew and grew defensively, Paul Robinson looked unbeatable and, as we had more of the play, Thimothee Atouba curled home what turned out to be the winner on his full debut at the start of the second half.
"A win against a big and good team, Newcastle, and away is a good performance. I'm very happy for my players," said the Head Coach afterwards.
"When you play a good team away in a magnificent stadium like St James Park it's very difficult.
"When you then play against Shearer, Bellamy, Robert, Jenas and the whole Newcastle team you know you have to defend from the first minute.
"After 20 minutes my players had more confidence and saw the possibility of a good result. I am not surprised about how we played and I am pleased with the result for my young team."
Jacques Santini was delighted with the way we weathered the early storm before coming out on top at St James Park.
