Sandro is relishing the chance to go head-to-head with fellow Brazilian international Fernandinho at Manchester City this weekend.

We’re back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, coming up against a City side that’s in imperious form on home soil having won all five top flight games at the Etihad this season – scoring 20 goals and conceding just two.

It’s a fixture that’s taken on extra significance for us in recent seasons with both sides jockeying for position in the upper reaches of the table – and for Sandro, in particular, the chance to oppose his fellow countryman presents the potential for a fantastic battle at the heart of the midfield.

“Fernandinho is my friend,” said Sandro, our central midfield workhorse. “I’ve played with him twice on international duty for Brazil. He’s a very good player, very quick in midfield. He can play defence and also play forward.

“He’s also great on the ball. We have to push him, put him under pressure and look after him – and not just him. City have lots of good players, but so do we and we will give everything.”

Sandro is fully aware of City’s impressive record at home, but he’s also confident in our own abilities to go there and get a result.

“I think it will be a difficult game, like every match,” continued the 24-year-old. “We have to go and play with confidence from the beginning. We will need everything on the pitch because it’s a hard game to win there, but we have to do it.

“From the start of the game we have to push on, to fight for every ball, to be on top of City.

“A win would be great for us. Every match is important. Let’s go to try to win this match first. We can do it. We can win there.”
