A group of our more senior players underwent a gruelling session of running at our training camp in Sweden this morning.
Stephen Carr, Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and new recruits Pedro Mendes and Sean Davis were in the group that completed timed laps around the pitch at our training base just outside Gothenburg.
With the coaching staff and boss Jacques Santini monitoring their progress, the group were set this task - 4x300m at 1:15min per lap, rest two minutes, 2x300m at 1:12min per lap, rest two minutes, 1x300m at 1:05min, rest two minutes followed by another 1x300m at 1:05.
The players then rested for three minutes before repeating the whole process again.
After a longer break, the running group joined the rest of the squad for 11-a-side over the full pitch.
Development coach Clive Allen explained: "There is a base fitness the players have to build up and Dominique (Cuperly, coach) has a programme of running that he wants different groups to go through.
"The whole thing has to be tailored around the games we are playing so the group involved tonight were doing fast footwork and speed work but what you might term the more senior group who might not be as involved needed to increase their fitness work so a running session was planned.
"It's always an exercise where a group is running together that you will get quicker runners and those who wouldn't neccessary struggle but might find it harder to keep up.
"The pace is monitored, they asked me throughout for time marks and they quickly work out how fast they have to run.
"It's good for team work because they work together and make sure they hit the times required. It was a good session and it's not easy, they have to work very hard individually and collectively."
