Danny Rose was the hero as England Under-21s secured a vital three points in European Championship qualifying against Portugal at Wembley.
The midfielder scored the only goal of the game five minutes before half-time to take Stuart Pearce's Young Lions to within three points of leaders Greece with a game in hand in Group Nine.
‘Rosey' started the game on the left of a five-man midfield and pounced when Newcastle's Andy Carroll knocked down Michael Mancienne's long ball in the box.
It was the 19-year-old's first goal at Under-21 level on this his seventh cap having first been called up by Pearce for last summer's Championships in Sweden.
Kyle Naughton also came off the bench after 76 minutes to win his sixth Under-21 cap in the victory.
The Young Lions now travel to Lithuania for their next qualifying match on Tuesday.
