Roberts and Miller set for Hall of Fame

Posted on 28 August 2015  - 17:30

On a day that saw us discover our next European opponents, we are delighted to announce that two defenders who starred in our famous 1984 UEFA Cup success are to be inducted into the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame.

Graham Roberts and Paul Miller became a formidable force when they teamed up in the heart of our defence and together they provided the platform on which our successful side of the early 1980s was built.

The pair, famed for their tough-tackling, no-nonsense approach, played integral roles as we won back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982, but their crowning moments arguably arrived on the European stage.

With Paul – known among friends and former team-mates as ‘Maxy’ – having scored in the first leg of the 1984 UEFA Cup Final against Anderlecht away from home, Graham followed suit with a vital late equaliser in the White Hart Lane return to take the showpiece tie to penalties. ‘Robbo’, who captained the team on the night in the absence of regular skipper Steve Perryman, then scored his spot kick as we won the shootout to lift the famous trophy in glorious fashion in front of our own supporters.

Graham was initially signed from non-league Weymouth and played 287 games for us between 1980 and 1986, while home-grown defender Paul made 285 appearances between 1979 and 1987.

On Thursday, October 15, 2015, they will both be inducted into our Hall of Fame.

“I’m absolutely overjoyed about it,” said Graham this week. “There are not many people who get nominated and for myself and my family it’s a great privilege.

“When the Club wants to induct you into the Hall of Fame to join the likes of Pat Jennings and Dave Mackay, it’s a real honour and I’m really looking forward to the occasion.”

Paul (pictured, above, holding the UEFA Cup aloft in 1984) added: “It’s a very proud achievement and I was over the moon when I heard the news. I’m a big Spurs man, the club has been my life and it still is my life.

“From our team, Ray Clemence, Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa are in the Hall of Fame so it’s lovely to be able to follow them. The club has given me my oldest friends – even our mums and dads became friends so we really are like a big family. It’s a tremendous honour, I’m really proud for me and my family and I can’t wait to share a special evening with Graham and our fans.”
