Steve McClaren has confirmed that Paul Robinson will start in goal for England in Saturday's vital European Championship qualifier against Israel at Wembley.

Steve McClaren has confirmed that Paul Robinson will start in goal for England in Saturday's vital European Championship qualifier against Israel at Wembley.

The spotlight has been on the number one jersey since Robbo tipped Bernd Schneider’s cross onto the bar for Kevin Kuranyi to score in the friendly defeat against Germany on August 28. David James was called into the squad and tipped in many areas to take over.

However, boss McClaren will stick by Robbo - number one since September 2004.

"Paul Robinson will be in goal," said McClaren. "That was a decision I made two or three days after the game. Paul's reaction was as I expected it to be, very professional this week. He has done very, very well. He has always had my trust and confidence and I'm sticking with him."
