English Barclays Premiership

It was honours even as we dominated the second half at The Hawthorns without grasping maximum points.

Jermain Defoe cancelled out Zoltan Gera's early strike to make it 1-1 at half-time and we took control after the break, Defoe struck a post, Sean Davis forced a fine save out Russel Hoult but we couldn't quite carve out the killer chance.

Even Baggies boss Gary Megson conceded he was happy with a point straight after the game.

West Brom made a storming start but offered little after, apart from occasion flashes from Kanu and Gera, relying on a more direct style that led to a plethora of offside flags.

Hungarian Gera made an immediate impact on his debut by opening the scoring after three minutes but we slowly worked our way back into the game - Pedro Mendes particularly impressive - and after a couple of near misses and one fine save from Hoult, we levelled the score.

The equaliser was all about Defoe. Picking the ball on half-way, he drove forward, exchanged passes with Fredi Kanoute before striking low through Thomas Gaardsoe's legs, Hoult's hands and into the corner.

The second half was all about us. It could have been 2-1 within minutes as Jamie Redknapp cleverly dummied Sean Davis' pass and Defoe crashed a shot against the post.

Minutes later and a similar move found Davis at the far post and his shot was destined for the top corner only for Hoult to atone for his error on the goal by tipping over.

We continued to dictate possession but the only other chance of the match fell to Horsfield at the other end. It was another quick break from our attack, Kanu played Horsfield into the box but his first touch was poor and allowed Paul Robinson to come out and block.

3mins: GOAL. First attack, Naybet cleared initial danger, Scimeca headed back, Gera got goal side of Naybet and finished across Robinson from 16 yards. 0-1.

12mins: Horsfield bundled his way past King and Naybet but King back to block shot from edge of box.

17mins: Kanoute dribbled past three defenders on his way to the byline, left side of box, cutback but no-one there.

21mins: CLOSE. Mendes onto Scimeca's header from Edman's long throw, caught it perfectly but shot deflected just wide.

23mins: Defoe laid off Davis pass to Mendes, saw early chance of lob, put it into top tier.

25mins: CLOSE. Atouba cut out pass, quick break as Mendes released Defoe, 30-yard run and shot from edge of box deflected into side-netting.

29mins: SAVE. Davis shot went through a crowd, Hoult did well to parry then even better to get up and flick loose ball away from Defoe. Good pressure now.

30mins: Atouba skipped past Scimeca, not sure if attempted cross or shot but ball fizzed just over.

31mins: Deep cross from Greening met by Gera at far post, King back to clear danger as Horsfield lurked.

33mins: West Brom break down left, Horsfield in space at far post, Kanu overhit pass.

34mins: GOAL. Defoe break, one-two with Kanoute, left foot shot from 25 yards through Purse's legs and Hoult's hands into corner. 1-1.

38mins: POST/SAVE/DISALLOWED GOAL: Gera's driven cross flicked onto post by Kanu, Robinson great reaction save from Johnson's follow up, Kanu overhead kicked loose ball into roof of net but correctly ruled out for offside.

44mins: Another quickfire Defoe break, spread ball wide to Atouba, low cross to near post that both Defoe and Purse slid in for, ball went safe.

Half-time: WBA 1, Spurs 1

47mins: WOODWORK. Fine move, Davis pass dummied by Redknapp for Defoe, instant hit crashed back off post.

47mins: SAVE. Atouba work down left flank, cross went through to Davis at far post, left foot shot from 10 yards superbly tipped over by Hoult.

52mins: SAVE. West Brom quick break from our possession, Kanu into Horsfield, in box, poor first touch enabled Robinson to come out and block at his feet.

53mins: SUB. Dyer for Johnson.

58mins: Great ball in from left by Edman but equally good diving header away by Gaardsoe. Defensive mix up then handed ball back to Atouba, low drive blocked by Hoult's legs.
