The sad news in the morning of the death of the legendary Bill Nicholson left White Hart Lane in reflective mood before kick-off and the dark clouds over the ground were not lifted by the 90 minutes of Premiership action.
Given the day's events it was perhaps no surprise we started slowly and Bolton took advantage to edge ahead in the 11th minute. It was a pretty simple goal as Gary Speed swung in a free-kick from the right and defender Radhi Jaidi beat Paul Robinson in the air to head home from close range.
Jussi Jaaskelainen saved bravely from Johnnie Jackson after 24 minutes and that sparked our best spell of the match.
The Bolton keeper did well to get down to Fredi Kanoute's 20-yarder, Anthony Gardner glanced a header just wide and the defender then saw Nicky Hunt block his goalbound effort.
You sensed a goal was coming and it arrived after 41 minutes. A superb goal it was as well - one might say typical of the traditions of the club. A good spell of possession appeared to be going no-where when Noureddine Naybet stepped in and drilled a pass towards Robbie Keane. The Irish star stepped over the pass and spun away from his man, took the return pass from Kanoute and buried his chance from 12 yards.
The majority of the 36,025 crowd were willing the lads to go on and grasp the victory but the second half proved a patchy affair.
Okocha tried his luck from distance without troubling Robinson and Stelios Giannakopoulos might have done better when he flashed a volley inches wide.
Jermain Defoe - on the bench at the start alongside the returning Sean Davis - came on after 70 minutes only for Bolton to regain the lead three minutes later.
Not suprisingly Okocha was involved, this time his 20-yarder forcing a low save from Robinson. Giannakopoulos latched onto the rebound but Robinson was up in time to save again only for the third ball to fall to Henrik Pedersen - who had just joined the action himself - to tap home from six yards.
Late pressure did not lead to many chances but we were inches away with the best as Kanoute's header from Mendes' lovely cross cannoned back off the foot of the post.
