Silva Sousa's double put us in charge in the first half of a game that we dominated from start to finish with Johnnie Jackson putting the issue beyond doubt minutes after the restart.
All three goals were headers and all three delivered on a plate by some superb wide play.
The only surprise was that in-form Lee Barnard didn't add to his recent tally, not that it was for want of trying - Chelsea keeper Yves Makabu denied the striker three times with his feet in the second half.
At the other end, Rob Burch only had to deal with shots from distance and the Blues rarely threatened at close quarters with Stephen Kelly in commanding form at centre-back.
We had controlled the first period in terms of possession without really creating ourselves but that all changed with the two-goal burst just shy of the half-hour.
The opener arrived after 28 minutes as Spase Dilevski fed Phil Ifil on the overlap and the full-back's cross was perfect for Silva Sousa to nod home.
The second followed on the half-hour and was a mirror image of the first as Mark Yeates whipped in the ball from the left and Silva Sousa's downward header nestled nicely in the top corner.
Yeates was getting more and more into the game and was the key figure at the start of the second half.
He had already tied the defence in knots to get in an early shot when he set up the third goal, receiving a 50-yard pass from Kelly, leaving Dean Smith chasing his tail before lifting the ball onto the grateful head of Jackson who buried from close range.
Barnard and Dean Marney went close and Yeates grazed the side-netting before the Barnard v Makabu show.
He almost capitalised on a move he started when he took a shot early that Makabu saved with his feet after 74 minutes.
Two minutes later and the striker worked a yard in the box only for Makabu's feet to deny him again and with a four minutes left, it was the same story, this time Barnard just a few yards out watched in despair as the keeper somehow flicked his effort over - again with his feet.
