Reserves face tough test

Posted on 3 September 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood takes a young side to face a vastly experienced Arsenal outfit at Underhill, with only Tim Sherwood providing significant first team know-how.

International commitments deny Colin a number of key options, Simon Davies, Ciaran Toner and Alton Thewell are all on duty for their respective countries and Oyvind Leonhardsen - who played in the opener against Nottingham Forest - is away with Norway.

Apart from Sherwood, only John Piercy and Matthew Etherington have featured in first team action and the team is largely made up of Academy players who will no doubt benefit from playing against players of international standing.

A newcomer to the reserve team fold is under-19 midfielder Mark Hughes, a second year trainee who made 24 appearances for our successful under-17 side last season.

By contrast, the Arsenal side contains names such as Dennis Bergkamp, Kanu, Ray Parlour, Martin Keown and Lauren.

Squad: Gavin Kelly, Shwan Jalal, Ron Henry, Stephen Kelly, Lee Barnard, John Piercy, Tim Sherwood, Matthew Etherington, Steven Ferguson, Yannick Kamanan, Ben Bowditch, Mark Hughes, James Quilter, Dean Marney, Johnnie Jackson, Chris Herron, Maurizio Consorti.

Arsenal team: Stack, Lauren, Keown, Stepanovs, Upson, Parlour, Grimandi, Imamota, Sidwell, Bergkamp, Kanu. Subs: Holloway, Oates, Chilvers, Itonga, Barratt.
