The midfielder looked back to his best bombing up and down in a night of plusses - apart from the result - in a snowy South London.
Radek Cerny made his debut in goal, we defended well against the Premier League quality strikeforce of Jonatan Johansson and Francis Jeffers, Davis and Dean Marney ran the midfield against Jason Euell, Rohan Ricketts showed flashes of his best while Lee Barnard and Mounir El Hamdaoui always looked a threat.
When Barnard slotted home his 11th goal in 14 outings five minutes from time a draw looked the least we deserved but play switched to the other end in the final minute, Lloyd Sam swung the ball in from the left and it deflected off Barnard's head before nestling in the far corner.
In hindsight, perhaps we could have guessed it was going to be one of those nights when we struck the inside of the same post twice in as many seconds after just four minutes.
As he would do effectively in the first half, Ricketts cut in from the right flank, let fly and his shot cannoned back off the inside of the left upright. Barnard pounced on the rebound but Stephan Andersen in the Charlton goal somehow fingertipped it onto the inside of the same post and this time to safety.
Charlton came back into it until almost unbelievably the inside of the same post denied us again, this time Ricketts cutting inside before sliding in Mounir El Hamdaoui who beat Andersen all ends up but not the woodwork.
The next action of note was Charlton's opener after 23 minutes. Decent build-up play led to Long feeding Johansson who made no mistake from eight yards.
Mark Yeates responded straight away only for Andersen to tip his 25-yarder wide at full stretch and the Irish winger tried his luck a couple more times, just wide on both occasions, before the home keeper gathered well from Ricketts.
Those two crossed swords again in the first action of the second half, Ricketts driving low but Andersen grasping to his right after 50 minutes.
Two minutes later and ex-Spur Chris Perry came to the rescue when Andersen failed to hold a Yeates drive but Charlton hit back with Cerny saving well from Sam and Jeffers lashing just wide.
Paul O'Donoghue provided the next threat with successive headers from corners, the second a free header from eight yards and Yeates should have done better when Marney picked him out but he glanced wide from close range.
Euell and Sam might have done better before the breakthrough with five minutes left. Yeates whipped in a cross from the right that Andersen could only parry out to Marney, he stepped around Fuller, was tripped and Barnard made no mistake from the spot.
You felt a draw was the least we deserved but then the hammer blow. With time ticking away, Sam whipped the ball in from the left and it looped off Barnard's head beyond Cerny into the far corner.
