The midfielder looked sharp in his first game since November after being laid low by an energy-sapping virus.
Starting in a right-midfield role, Simon was heavily involved in everything going forward, rarely gave the ball away and looked bright as a button. A positive first step on the comeback trail.
The goals came in the second half with our recent recruits Emil Hallfredsson and David Limbersky combining to hand Lee Barnard the chance to put us ahead from the spot before Palace levelled via Tyrone Berry's deflected goal.
A draw was about right on the night with possession even although Palace carved out the better chances and got on top later on and Nicky Eyre, called on late to take the keeper's jersey, did himself no harm with a couple of fine saves.
There were few clear-cut chances in the first half although plenty of football played by both sides.
We enjoyed more possession but Palace came closest to scoring when Eyre managed to turn Ryan Hall's free-kick away from the foot of his left-hand post. The young keeper also did well to save at Freedman's feet.
At the other end, Speroni had to be on his toes to pluck out Davies' drive from the angle and that was about it in terms of scoring opportunities.
Owen Price replaced Davies at the interval and we took the lead 12 minutes into the second half.
Hallfredsson, impressive in a central midfield role, released Limbersky and the Czech went over under a clumsy challenge from Mark Hudson. The referee pointed to the spot immediately and Barnard confidently struck home from 12 yards.
Palace hit back well, their man-of-the-match Hall volleyed just wide and then they were level, Freedman worked some magic on the right, crossed and substitute Berry's shot deflected off Kelly and left Eyre helpless, 65 minutes on the clock.
Palace had the better of the chances in the final quarter with Eyre saving well from Hall and Togwell before a late disallowed goal as Shipperley tapped home Hall's cross only to be flagged offside.
