Chris Hughton's reserve side restored some pride after last week's drubbing at Southampton in a battle of youth at the Lane on Tuesday night.

Boss Chris handed Maurizio Consorti his debut, gave a second game at this level to 17-year-old Ben Bowditch and had a bench consisting of youth team players and goalkeeper Gavin Kelly.

In truth, chances were few and few between but we carved out the best on offer with Steven Ferguson desperately unlucky not to find the scoresheet.

But after last week's shock at the Dell the emphasis shifted to defence and on that front it was a job well done.

Ferguson's first chance, arguably his best, arrived in the seventh minute. John Piercy clipped a ball over the top and as the visiting defence hesitated, Ferguson was onto the ball in flash. He rounded keeper Lee Grant but in doing so, ran the ball out of play.

Grant was soon tested by a Matthew Etherington cross that he did well to hold onto under the crossbar under pressure from Ferguson and he was there again to deny Ferguson at his feet after a swift break when a Derby attack broke down.

At the other end Consorti, competing well in midfield, blocked a Bragstad effort and Bolder's volley flew inches wide.

Rams had the better of the opening exchanges in the second half with Bragstad firing wide when well placed, Twigg driving wide from the edge of the area and Blatsis flicking a header narrowly wide from Boertien's free-kick.

Having weathered that storm we came back into the game. Korsten cut in from the right to test Grant at his near post from 20 yards before Grant produced the save of the night - somehow flicking Ferguson's near-post stab from Etherington's cross over the bar. All in all, a fair result.
